Search engines use spiders to crawl the web and collect information but not everything you place in your website can necessarily be seen by the spiders. Links in javascripts for example cannot be crawled by the spiders "yet" so if you use dhtml menus, flash menus, or javascript menus than you are basically crippling your chances to get all of your pages spidered and indexed quickly because the search engine spiders simply don't see those links.

Flash, dhtml menus and content might look great and be user friendly, which are important to any website, but if the big search engines can't find you then neither can your visitors. Using basic html menus with hard links is the best way to go and having a comprehensive site map will only increase your popularity in the search engines.

There has been alot of talk about javascripts and some Dhtml menus being search engine friendly comming soon but I wouldn't hold my breath The big boys seem slow and reluctant to make this possible even though you and I know they could easily accomplish it.
